A nice drive through the “instep” of Italy to our digs for
the next 4 nights at Oria (renting from sister-in-law Sue’s sister Thea). A
lovely little old Italian cottage in the middle of olive groves. Interesting
beaches along the way – some with pebbles & some with nearly white sand
& millions of umbrellas & banana lounges but no people?? Oria has a
lovely little ‘old town’ with Castle, Cathedral & Piazza.

Today we ventured further down the heel. First Lecce, a
large city with a nice public garden, the usual castle, lovely old laneways &
fantastic churches. A highlight was a visit to the post office to send a USB
stick back to Aus with photos. Three queues, 5 staff & an hour of time was
all it took?? Made our public service look efficient?? Then to the lovely beach
resort of San Cataldo & lunch at Otranto overlooking the azure waters of
the Mediterranean. Then to Capo Santa Maria di Leuca overlooking the beautiful
white houses of Leuca. Gallipoli rounded off a great day with a stroll through
the streets & a coffee before heading home.
A rest day with a hair & beard trim at the local barber
– an interesting exercise with him having no English & me no Italian but
good result & only 10 Euro.
Today another pleasant drive to the quaint village of
Alberobello with its beautiful Trulli houses – quite amazing. There are many in
the town but they are also scattered through the countryside on farms &
just look great.
