May 27 to 28 The Spur

Drove from Oria to Trani, a beautiful sea side town with a lovely port surrounded by white stone buildings. The Cathedral of Trani was again impressive as were the public gardens. We then headed to the amazing Monte S. Angelo with its unique church built in a cave on the cliff face (Sanctuario di San Michele). In fact many buildings were on the cliff edge with incredible panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the sea. From there we drove through the Foresta Umbra, a fantastic forest of beech, oak, larch, maple & ash trees, to Vieste. A lovely meal of mussels & scaloppine by the seaside to finish the day.

Foresta Umbra
Today we had a pleasant three hour walk in Foresta Umbra to the songs of many birds – also good training for our Mont Blanc walk. Then drove to Lido del Sole & along the narrow strip of land between the sea & Lago di Varano – expected a beautiful drive but couldn’t see the water either side even though just 50 metres away – a bit underwhelmed. Stopped at Termoli for the night – a lovely seaside town.
